ANTICIPATION is building as volunteers and members of the Missions Fest 2009 planning team prepare for the 26th annual conference, to be held January 30 – February 1 at Canada Place.

The theme, ‘If My People Pray,’ represents a call for the church in the Metro Vancouver to draw together in unified prayer for our city, our nation and the world.

The Christian community in the Lower Mainland faces unique opportunities at this point in history. The world will literally be on our doorstep in 2010 for the Olympics, and the church will have many openings for service and witness in the community. There is a grassroots movement calling people to pray for God’s direction and intervention in our city. These groups include men and women, pastors and lay leaders, youth and seniors.

Missions Fest speakers will address the theme of prayer. Tony Campolo’s initial plenary address is titled ‘Red Letter Prayers,’ and focuses upon the red-letter words of Jesus.

Mark Buchanan will speak on ‘Rest and Risk,’ two elements of prayer.

Joseph D’souza of the Dalit Freedom Network will teach on ‘The Lord’s Prayer and Kingdom Mission.’

Marie Ens, a spunky 70-plus senior from Abbotsford who has spent her life serving the Cambodian people, will share her testimony and speak about “the widow’s might.”

Mike Yankoski, author of Under the Overpass, will challenge youth and young adults to put their faith and prayers into action. These speakers join more than 120 seminar presenters who are considering the implications of what happens as God’s people pray.

Samuel Longfellow, brother of legendary author Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, wrote: “prayer moves the hand which moves the world.” He discovered that there is a dynamic link between what is called the deeper life, or Spirit-filled life, and missions.

One of the most oft-quoted passages of scripture, I Chronicles 7:14, begins with: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray...“. Some read these words as a conditional clause – as if God’s work hinges upon our human action. But they are mistaken. The call to unified prayer is a statement of intention and intimate relationship.

Prayer draws us into the presence of God and reveals the heart of God, changing one’s desires into the very purposes of God. This includes a heart for all the peoples and nations of the world.

Great things happen when people pray. Five leaders gathered in Antioch and heard the clear voice of the Spirit calling Barnabas and Saul to preach the Gospel, and the New Testament missionary movement began (Acts 13:1-3).

Two lone prisoners, beaten and bruised after an unjust series of events, brought growth and encouragement to the church in Philippi through their songs and prayers (Acts 16:25).

The Moravians, led by Count Zinzendorf and a small band of Protestant refugees, began a 24 hour prayer chain that lasted a century.

The American Foreign Missionary Society was born when a group of five students gathered for prayer under a haystack to get out of a thunderstorm.

The world changes when God’s people get together to pray. This is the thought and intention behind this year’s conference.

Children

Pre-School Program

Ages 2 1/2 (if trained) to 5
Room 14

This is a missions-oriented Pre-School Program conducted by the Early Childhood Education students of Columbia Bible College. The program provides a variety of activities including a circle time with a story and music, a craft time and a playtime. Light snacks will be provided during each session. Each of the sessions will be distinct, with a focus on a different country and people group.

PARENTS PLEASE NOTE: Registration is $1.00/hour per child for each session. Registration of each child in each session is necessary. Bring ID (medical card) in case of emergency. It is also important that the parents allow their child(ren) to participate to the completion of each registered session without interruptions. In cases of emergency, the parents will be contacted immediately.Schedule:

NOTE: From the Missions Fest Office

Please be considerate of the presenters and other children by not interrupting a session to take your children out before the session ends. If you are more than 15 minutes late you can pick up your child in Meeting Room 15, but you may be asked to pay $5.00 for every 15 minutes per child.

The Children’s Program is designed to introduce and teach a variety of cultures to children. We believe that this learning will lead to greater understanding of neighbours and classmates, and increase the possibilities of reaching out to them.

Tony Campolo

Tony Campolo is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Eastern University. He is the founder of the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education, an organization that develops schools and social programs in third world countries and in cities across North America. He is the author of 35 books, his latest three being, Letters to a Young Evangelical, The God of Intimacy and Action and Red Letter Christians, A Citizen’s Guide to Faith and Politics. Dr. Joseph D’souza

Joseph D’Souza is the International President of the Dalit Freedom Network, an organization which represents the interests of India’s “untouchables.” He is the author of Dalit Freedom: Now and Forever, a book which traces the history of the Dalit quest for emancipation and the response of the Indian church. Mike Yankoski

Mike Yankoski is a graduate from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA. Mike's book Under the Overpass captures the journey that he and a friend took when they chose to live as homeless people. They did this in order to better understand the plight of the poor and interact with the most despised people of society. His passion is to challenge youth to live out their faith, be directed by God's Word, and engage with the world they live in. Marie Ens

Marie Ens was born in Saskatchewan and moved to the Lower Mainland as a young girl. Beginning in 1961, the Ens family spent a number of years working in Cambodia. After the country fell to the Khmer Rouge in 1975 they relocated to France where they worked with Cambodian refugees. After her husband passed away in 1991, Marie returned to Cambodia in 1994 to resume her ministry in the land that she loves. Now in her "retirement years", she works at Place of Rescue, an AIDS hospice and orphanage, outside the capital city of Phnom Penh. Marie has been called “the Mother Theresa” of Cambodia, providing education and medical care in the name of Jesus to the poor of this SE Asian nation. Learn more about Marie's work here.
